Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD is a serious and debilitating condition faced by the countless people who have had traumatic experiences. These may be a terrorist accident, sudden death of a family member or a close friend, any severe accident, natural disaster or sexual harassment. PTSD can also be referred to as the “Artist formerly known as battle fatigue, combat stress or shell shock. ”
In this condition, the brain essentially hangs on to a painful experience and refuses to let go, with the patient caught in a vicious cycle of re-experiencing the traumatic event.

• People who have been experiencing more than 2 or 3 disaster events have a high risk of developing Post traumatic Stress Disorder.
• Sexual harassment is the common reason among children and the ladies that increases the risk of having Post traumatic Stress Disorder.
• Military people are the common victims

How to treat

PTSD can be treated with the help of different useful therapies and medicines. Currently psychotherapy, family therapy, group therapy and medications are being used.
Due to advancing technology , there are some exciting new therapies on the horizon.

Cognitive therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a vital tool in the treatment of PTSD. It can be delivered via a computer based program or via a live therapist. The main aim is to train the patient to recognize faulty learned automatic thoughts and replace them with more reasonable responses.
In the initial stages, the therapists help you to divert the trauma thoughts and then change those thoughts with the happy or the less terrifying thoughts. After practicing this therapy, the patient will be able to cope with the worst feelings like the fear, anger and the guilt.

Exposure therapy
The aim of the therapist is to make the patient fearless about his own memories and to bulletproof the patient to a point that the traumatic re-triggering of painful memories do not cause any distress.
Initially its conducted in a secure environment . The therapist talks initially about less provoking situations gradually building up towards the situation which is the most distressing , desensitizing the patient in the process.

Virtual reality Therapy
In this therapy , computer generated scenarios are created in front of the patient and training is provided to handle the situation in a good way. This is one of the cutting edge treatments for PTSD in which research is ongoing.
The virtual reality treatment serves as a bridge between the real world activities and the stressful environments of people. After going through the virtual reality treatment, the patient feels secure and fearless in the real environment.

Engagement therapy
This therapy is used for the people who are not engaged to their lives activities anymore. Different engaging points are presented to the patient encouraging participation. Motivation enhancement, commitment therapy and the dialectical behavior therapy are the part of engagement therapy.
